Do it Yourself: Toilet Dam

If you have an older, less efficient toilet, you can save 1 Liter of water every time you flush by making a handy-dandy toilet dam.

You will need :

  • 1 empty 1L plastic jar with lid (such as a peanut butter jar)
  • 1 fist size rock or other heavy item

Directions :

  1. Drop the rock or heavy item into the jar, fill it up with water and close the lid tightly.
  2. Lift the lid off the back of your toilet.
  3. Flush the toilet and let the water empty out and carefully place the jar inside the tank. Make sure the jar isn't touching any of the moving parts, or impeding their movement (the jar will sit on the left hand side in most toilets).
  4. Place the lid on the back of your toilet and you'll begin to save 1L
    of water with every flush.
