Description of Case Study:
The design for this house come from architect John Leroux, which seeks to take full advantage of passive solar features, including maximum windows on southern face, window overhang to promote shading in summer peak heat hours and to allow full sun exposure during winter months. This allows for maximum light and heat gain when it is needed most, while reduce unnecessary heating. Also, the overhang is used to provide extra insulation on the second floor, where it connects just below the upstairs windows.
The building envelope is also well sealed and insulated, so as to reduce thermal bridging (i.e. from wood) and to trap heat.
The owners also have many other energy saving and efficiency aspects, including rain barrels for watering the lawn, a clothes line to reduce energy use, and energy efficient appliances, providing a very energy efficient house. |
