Description of Case Study:
The ground source heat pump(GHSP) was installed while the house was being constructed. It is a closed loop, water based system, comprising a loop of interior pipes for in-floor heating and a loop of exterior pipes in a 6 ft x 6 ft x 600 ft trench. This is a horizontal GHSP system, which is more affordable. The system has a total of 2400 ft length of piping.
In addition to providing in-floor heating, this system also preheats the domestic hot water for this 2800 square foot home. In floor heating is placed in both cement (in the basement) and under wood flooring, with insulation underneath.
When visited for this case study, the temperature of the water coming in was 121 degrees Fahrenheit, or 49 degrees Celsius. By mid November, this was still the only heat source they needed to use, with back up heat from a stove used only during the coldest days. |
