Falls Brook Centre has developed a number of innovative, multimedia resources for bringing our international & environmental on-the-ground experience into the classroom. The resource lists are divided into four main themes and according to grade level:

Global Issues Teaching Materials

GRADES 3-5

Environmental Stewardship Activities (Children’s Festivals)
Grade 3-5 level. Extra materials required. Classroom or outdoor activity.
Description: 2 relay races, one related to waste management and one related to water conservation; lots of materials needed, but worthwhile, and lots of running and moving for students.

Global Consumption Activities (Children’s Festivals)
Grade 3-5 level. Extra materials required. Outdoor activity.
Description: These 2 activities illustrate to children the concept of the imbalance of resource distribution around the world and the difference between our needs and our wants here in Canada.

Water Conservation Activities (Children’s Festivals)
Grade 4-5 level. Extra materials required. Classroom activity.
Description: This is a series of 6 activities that illustrate the value of water and the actual amount that is available to us for consumption. Also demonstrates the impact human actions have on water supply.

GRADES 6-8

Child Rights Activity
Grade 6-8 level. Extra materials optional (if drawing activity done). Classroom activity.
Description: This activity encourages children to consider their rights as a child, and promotes discussion between students about the meaning of rights and their importance for youth.

Food Security Youth Action Kit and Power Point

Description: “GRUB”: A comprehensive guide for youth about the implications of our modern diets and globalization, including suggestions for actions to take; includes power point with script and handbook.

Internationally Responsible Menstrual Care

This is an informative overview of the environmental and health problems associated with the way women in North America deal with menstruation; includes power point with script and handbook.

Landmine Risk Education Handbook
All ages. No extra materials required. Informational, contains several activity ideas for youth. A comprehensive set of strategies for involving children in the process of spreading awareness and knowledge of landmines, particularly the use of child-to-child approach to education.

World View Take-Home Reading Assignments
Grade 8. No extra material required. Discussion questions included. These reading assignments introduce students to global environmental issues through specific case studies of community organizations from Latin America. The readings are based on Falls Brook Centre’s international experience. Each reading is accompanied by discussion questions linked to curriculum outcomes from Grade 8 social studies units (culture, technology, economy and interdependence).

Distribution Debacle
Grade 10-11 level. Extra materials required. Classroom activity.
Description: A board game designed to give students a chance to simulate the global exchange and distribution of resources.

Managing Resources North and South
Grade 11-12 level. Extra materials required. Classroom activity or family board game. 2-14 players.
Description: This game’s objective is to be the player who can build the best ecosystem by answering questions correctly to collect trees and water droplets. It is fully bilingual, with all questions written in English and Spanish.

Description: This resource provides students with a view of where luxury items come from while emphasizing the human rights implications of trade and using graphics to demonstrate who benefits how much from trade. Sample Lesson Plan also available.

Case Study: Food Security in Nicaragua

Case Study: Water Catchment in Nicaragua and India

Case Study 4: Land Mines in Nicaragua

Students will learn about where ‘luxury’ products that Canadians consume regularly come from and under what conditions they were produced and traded.

Food and Food Security: Slowing Down our Food

Grade 10-12 level: A lesson plan that includes background reading, a classroom activity, handouts and extension activity about the complex system upon which Canadians rely to obtain their food. Students are challenged to think critically about current economic and agricultural systems through a food mapping exercise and by searching for foods that are produced locally.

World View Take-Home Reading Assignments

Decision-making Hike (Children’s festivals)
Grade 3-5 level. Some materials required, also must take place on a hiking trail. Outdoor activity.
Description: This hike serves as a good introduction to the various forms of decision-making by allowing students to experience real group decision-making. Comes with script for leader.

Getting to know Our Non-Timber Forest Products

Students are encouraged to explore local NB products and will make a business plan for marketing the NTFP of their choice.

Case Study - Community Forestry in Mexico

Description: This board game uses trivia and fun to build and spread knowledge about the realities of climate change. Uses mudslides and bridges to illustrate the consequences of our relationship with the environment.

Climate Change All-Ages Activities
For ages 8-17. Extra materials required (blankets). To be used as part of a larger session on climate change- serves as a good introduction.
Description: This activity physically demonstrates the human-induced greenhouse effect using blankets; includes a script.

Energy Experience Kits

Energy Education Kits connect into physical, earth, and space science curriculum of the NB school district 14. Complete with theory and materials required for activities and demonstrations, the kits can be delivered by Falls Brook Centre staff or provincial middle school and high school educators.
