ACORN CONFERENCE 2009

Falls Brook Centre and the Mexican Network of Organic Markets at the ACORN conference 2009

FBC staffers were thrilled as usual to attend the 2009 Annual Conference of the Atlantic Canadian Organic Regional Network in Truro, NS from February 26th to the 28th. This year, we were fortunate to have two delegates from the Mexican Network of Organic Markets, Vanessa Ramirez and Sergio De La Cruz, travel to the Maritime region to take part in the conference. They delivered a presentation on their work with participatory organic certification within their network of organic markets.

The workshop was well-received by the audience of approximately 20 Atlantic Canadian organic farmers, consumers, and vendors. It was another great example of the value of sharing information and lessons between Northern and Southern partners; Canadians in the audience were inspired by the work done by our Mexican counterparts on finding creative, inclusive ways to certify organic products without the use of a third party. This innovative grassroots movement, which uses a surprisingly thorough set of organic standards, allows for a wide range of products grown in a multitude of different ecosystem types to be organically certified, assuring consumers of the highest quality, chemical-free and ecologically sound products.
