Fossil Fools puppets hit the road!
Happy Fossil Fools Day! Falls Brook Centre celebrated April Fools day with grade 6 students from John Caldwell School in Grand Falls. The students received a special visit from the One-World Puppet Troupe for the debut show of Fossil Fools: The Princess and her Pet. This fairy tale story takes place in the kingdom of Acirema where the citizens face a major crisis when they run out of fossil fuels. The princess and her funny friends quickly learn about the limits of non-renewable resources and how our daily lives are dependent on them.
The characters get themselves into quite a tizzy in Act 1 of the show and reach out to the audience to help them come up with a script ending for Act 2 in which the characters can hopefully pull themselves out of the mess they’ve created. Luckily for the princess, the grade six students of John Caldwell School were definitely up for the challenge. They got straight to work, developing funny, creative, practical and smart solutions to ease the plight of the citizens of Acirema. The students looked at the pros and cons from different points of view of various technologies for energy efficiency and conservation including skateboards, compact fluorescent light-bulbs, low-flow shower heads, solar panels and vermi-composting.
The students, teacher and puppeteers all had a fun filled afternoon. As one student commented, “I didn’t know that I could play and learn at the same time. This is so much fun.” Mme. Ouellette, science and social studies teacher wrote, "The students were as involved as they could be. They embraced the challenge of writing Act 2 and enjoyed giving their messages through puppets."
The Fossil Fools puppets will appear again to entertain and challenge more students to think critically about solutions for climate change mitigation during the Eco-Explorers grade 6 field trips to Falls Brook Centre at the end of the school year.
Download the students’ Act 2 scripts for Fossil Fools, coming soon.
