Analog Forestry Workshop

Location: Dominican Republic
Date: October 19th - 28th, 2008

This workshop had two main components.

  1. The establishment of  Analog Forestry Demonstration Areas at campesino farms in the Dominican Republic.
  2. A train the trainer workshop in Analog Forestry techniques.


The objective of this training was to give forest extension workers, campesinos and other interested participants the ability “to contribute to the restoration of forest ecosystems and to the economic development of rural communities through the implementation of Analog Forestry methodology. This training event disseminated the technical elements for the implementation of the principles and methodologies of Analog Forestry.  This training provided participants with the additional tools that make it possible to attain ecological landscape restoration and production of goods and services that contribute to social well being.


The TrainingTeam

The training team was headed by Dr. Ranil Senanayake, principal International Analog Forestry  trainer and included Mamerto Valerio, Forest Engineer and Executive Director of ENDA-Caribe; Dr. Carlos Navarro, researcher of Forestry, Natural Protected Areas and Biodiversity Department of CATIE, Costa Rica; Jean Arnold, Executive Director of Falls Brook Centre, a sustainable development demonstration centre in Canada and Milo Bekins Faries, President of the International Analog Forestry Network.

The training was a mix of field experience, classroom training and Policy interventions. The course was aimed at personnel and students working and interested in Biodiversity Restoration, small farmers and woodlot owners, conservationists and other professionals interested in replicating the Analog Forestry techniques.
