World View Take Home Readings

These reading assignments are designed for grade 8 & grade 11/12 social and environmental science classes (open to grade 9). They introduce students to global environmental issues through specific case studies of community organizations from Latin America. The readings are based on Falls Brook Centre’s international experience.

Angelica Barahona wakes up around 6:30am and washes her hands using water from the pila, which is a cement container that holds water. The pila promotes rain-water harvesting using an appropriate technology that suits the needs of the beneficiaries.

To make a living Doña Gabriela devotes her time to making tortillas, a flat and thin pancake made out of corn. A group of youth from New Brunswick and Falls Brook Centre helped Doña Gabriela with a donation to build her a fuel-efficient stove.

The local organic market initiative with the longest history began in 1996 in the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Local organic markets are places where Mexican consumers can buy local organic products to feed their children well and purchase healthy food.
