First Annual Forest Festival at FBC
On April 5th, Falls Brook Centre hosted a Forest Festival that honored Value Added and Non Timber Forest Products. The event that was an "Open House Day" to celebrate people who are engaged with value-added skills, crafts and forest-based products. The Forest Festival attracted approximately 80 visitors and over 12 presenters. It was a great day that saw families and general public come out to spend some hours talking, sharing and learning.
Artisans, Businesses and Organizations showcased at the festival included:
- Mike Oudemans, wood carver, offered a workshop on draw knife carving.
- Jeff Butler, outdoor survival instructor from North Woods Survival, offered workshop and demonstration on bush craft and fire by friction.
- Bill Miller, canoe builder, was building a miniature canoe for coffee table
- Avalon Enterprises, a lumber company from Hartland showcasing their products: custom moldings OSB, cutting boards, coasters, hardwood flooring and other wood products.
- Canadian Organic Maple Company Ltd. show case of a variety of products
- Public Land Campaign & Committee Against Transfer of Crown Land Allocations: had information about the present forest issues
- Trouts Unlimited: information for a proposed New Brunswick franchise
- Mushrooms resource booth about wild picking and cropping
- Willow furniture and black ash basket: showcased by Shaun Shaw
- Wood hand made instruments: Guitar and fiddle by Tegan Wong-Daugherty, harp and traditional drum using veneers from the Napadogan Mill by Lawrence Wuest and a djembe build with recycled hardwood floor boards from Kedgwick.
- Goods from the Woods: Simon J. Mitchell made lamp a shade out of birch bark.
