Interested in getting a taste and feel for organics in NB? Get it all at FBC's Tread Lightly Organic Workshops!


FBC organizes a series of workshops on different organic topics from May to September each season. These workshops will be hosted at Falls Brook Centre in the 2010 season.

Each workshop brings a wide range of participants together - from farmers and experienced gardeners to those who have never grown a garden before. Events are set up to include a seminar/discussion in the morning with guest speakers, followed by an organic lunch from the FBC Kitchen and guided tour with hands-on activity in the afternoon.
 
The $35 workshop registration fee includes the seminar, lunch, tour, hands on activity and handouts/supplementary readings.

Workshop Topics for 2010

Kitchen Garden: Where to begin?
Are you dreaming of delicious ripe tomatoes and beautiful fragrant Basil from your backyard? How about winter storage crops to supplement the family grocery bill? Growing your own vegetables, berries and fruit is a fun and rewarding way to get fresh air, a bit of exercise, save same money and feed your family delicious, fresh, nutrient rich foods that you raised yourself. If this appeals to you, but you are no sure where to start then join the gang at Falls Brook Centre along with expert guest speakers and learn how to begin growing your own food at home.

Grow Shiitake Mushrooms
Learn about the spectacular nutritional qualities of Shiitake Mushrooms as well as how to grow your own Shiitake Mushrooms! In this workshop the basics of mushroom gardening will be covered. Then, aspiring mushroom gardeners willhave the chance to take home their own inoculated log (additional fee applies).

Backyard Composting Basics
Every kitchen garden needs a backyard compost to maintain soil fertility; learn how to start your own garden compost. Answer your questions about temperatures, layering, to turn or not to turn and more. Dispel the myths that compost piles are “gross” or “stinky” by learning how to properly maintain your compost pile; you will be amazed at the results. (Your neighbours will too!)

Canning and Preserving Basics
You’ve grown a bountiful garden. Now what can you do to enjoy the summer colours and flavours throughout the winter? Join us and our crew of local experts who have been preserving and storing the harvest for many seasons to learn the basics of canning, freezing and storing.

Seed Saving Basics
The harvest season is coming to a close, but the growing cycle is in full swing as garden crops are maturing into their seed stage. So, what’s next? Join us and our guest speaker Andrea Berry from Hope Seeds and Perennials who will introduce you to the basics of seed saving and suggest some easy beginner projects; including how to plan out your seed saving garden. The workshop is being hosted at Hope Seeds, located in Knowlesville; participants will enjoy a guided tour of the HSP trials and seed gardens, as well as their seed cleaning and storage facilities. Experience hands-on simple techniques for seed cleaning cucumbers, tomatoes and peas.
