New Brunswick, Canada

The Community Energy Co-op (CEC) of New Brunswick is a for-profit co-operative with the mission to invest and participate in renewable energy and energy conservation efficiency projects in New Brunswick.

Formed in 2004, the CEC is operating out of the Falls Brook Centre (FBC) in Knowlesville NB, close to Florenceville.  The CEC leverages the renewable energy programs at FBC, which has demonstration installations including three solar hot water systems, several photovoltaic panels and three wind turbines.  The site is also home to New Brunswick’s first Net Metering installation, which connects renewable energy to NB Power through a home to offset domestic electricity use.

The current focus of the CEC is to develop the co-op structure and to establish itself as an autonomous body running on revenue streams including installations, consulting and training.  We are preparing for a membership drive in March and invite anyone interested in green-collar jobs or desiring to invest locally in the renewable energy sector to contact us.

The CEC has done preliminary wind studies at a dairy farm in Knowlesville and is now looking into the feasibility of various community-owned wind projects including a response to the provincial government’s Feb 6th call for 75 MW of energy projects with 51% community ownership.  The CEC has also been developing other lines of business including solar thermal system installations.  A twenty-cottage renewable energy consulting project is on the horizon for the spring.

We will be inviting one of Canada’s foremost trainers, former Canadian Solar Industries Association president, Joe Thwaites, to lead our Solar Thermal Installers workshop this April 26- May 2.  For more information about visit the CEC website.
